Leo Yockey

Hi, I’m Leo (he/him/his), a Technical Consultant, Writer, and Speaker from Los Angeles.

I am also the biracial, transgender son of a black Tanzanian immigrant and a white Californian. I write about these elements as they intersect with my career because representation matters. And because humans are complex individuals, these elements intersect a lot.

In 2019, I developed a severe stomach condition that caused me to lose nearly 30 pounds in a month. I quickly learned that the symptoms I was experiencing were caused by distress from systemic racism, and that many of my peers had already quit the tech industry under circumstances similar to mine.

This inspired me to join Hackertunity, a non-profit organization striving to end the cycle of poverty by providing training and resources for at-risk populations to build community-owned technological solutions. I also started my agency, MangoBass Consulting, to mitigate my vulnerability to hostile employers.

I believe that knowledge is power, and understanding is the first step towards progress. My dream is to be able to approach any opportunity without worrying whether my identity will prevent me from having a fair chance. I have a responsibility to share my experiences if I want to see change.

When I’m not working, I am typically reading or playing PS4. Traveling is fun, but I’m usually at home with my girlfriend and cat.
