Leo Yockey

Hi, I’m Leo (he/him/his), a Software Engineer, Writer, and Speaker from Los Angeles.

I am also the biracial, transgender son of a black Tanzanian immigrant and a white Californian. I write about these elements as they intersect with my career because they have given me a unique perspective of the world, and because representation matters.

My career was never a certainty. At the beginning of 2016, I was a security officer making $12/hour at a Las Vegas casino. Before that, I was a starving artist. I got into tech to improve my station and expand my horizons.

Now that I’m here, I spend a lot of time reflecting on the personal sacrifices I experienced along the way. I’ve lost friends and even faced my own mortality on this journey. But through it all I've found my inner strength, and a determination to create the world I wish to see. I am sharing my story in hopes that it will reach out and speak to others out here climbing despite the odds stacked against them.

I journal a lot, and sometimes that writing makes it onto my blog here. When I’m not working, I am typically reading or playing video games. My girlfriend, cat and I are riding out the pandemic together in our new apartment.
